Jalpaiguri Govt. Engineering College was established in the year 1963 which is affiliated to the University of North Bengal. It is the oldest of all technical institution beside the Bengal Engineering and Science University (Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur) in the state of West Bengal. The college is located in Jalpaiguri which is 42 kilometers east of the business town Siliguri. Jalpaiguri is famous for the Lataguri Gorumara forest which is one of the centers of attraction.
